Creative Writing for Quality Reading

Yerevan, 26-28 June 2014
A Workshop on Creative Writing for Quality Reading took place on June 26-28, 2014 within the framework of the Book Platform Project at the Writers' Union in Yerevan, Armenia. The participants of the workshop were 10 young writers, among them not only rather successful and well known writers who have at least one or two books published, such as Aram Pachyan, Armen Ohanyan, Hovhannes Tekgyozyan, Hrachya Saribekyan, Lilit Karapetyan, Hovhannes Ishkhanyan, etc., but also authors who still have only one or two publications in literary media.

The three-day-long workshop had two sessions daily, the morning sessions included presentations of Laure Pecher, editor and literary agent, on the main theoretical aspects of writing a successful quality novel, and the afternoon sessions were held by Viken Berberian, an American writer of Armenian origin, who managed practical exercises in Armenian language and held discussions on the writing pieces by participants.

As both the participants and the trainers admitted at the end of the training, this was a very interesting exchange of knowledge and opinions on contemporary writing and reading matters.

"This was very helpful for me especially right now when I am in the process of writing my second novel," – mentioned Aram Pachyan. "I am very much interested in such issues like the voice of the narrator and the structure of the novel. What was presented at the theoretical parts of the training was a very well developed structure of the main point to pay attention to when writing. This was a both-way view on the writing from inside, as a writer and outside, as a reader."

"We are thankful for this experience," – said Armen Ohanyan at his speech at the end of the training. "This was a comprehensive training on writing, which was very hard to imagine, considering the fact that writing can't actually have a one true methodology. Whether we agree to the terms used or not, we can't reject the experience of Ms Laure Pecher in the hard job of trying to select good books from numerous manuscripts and make a real success".

"I am going to review my own writing now, after this training. What was said and discussed made me rethink some of the realities", said Lilit Karapetyan, who is an author of one short story collection and is working on her first novel.
