New Voices from Georgia in Leipzig 2014

Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association presented Georgian literature at the Leipzig Book Fair, which was held on 13-16 March 2014. The Georgian national stand and the program New Voices from Georgia was organized by the GPBA and the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia. As Georgia is preparing and looking forward to being the Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2018, the participation at international book fairs is extremely crucial for the Georgian book sector professionals.

This year the Leipzig Book Fair was attended by 2 Georgian writers – Beso Khvedelidze and Anna Kordzaia-Samadashvili, whose books were translated into German in 2013. The readings of these authors and the presentation of the illustrator Otar Karalashvili at the fair had a huge interest among the visitors and foreign publishers. The presentation of international drama competition for Eastern Europe "Talking about Borders" was read by young German artists, and received a lot of attention.

The Georgian delegation, which comprised GPBA, Ministry of Culture of Georgia, the publishing houses "Intelekti" and "Artanuji", writers and an illustrator, actively promoted Georgian national literature in Germany, aiming to increase the awareness of Georgian contemporary literature abroad.

Medea Metreveli, Coordinator of Literature Promotion Department of Ministry of Culture of Georgia: "Participation of the Georgian stand at Leipzig Book Fair has a very big importance for the development of relations between Georgian and European Book sectors, which plays the main role to be the Guest of Honour at Frankfurt Book Fair in 2018."

Georgian Publishers and Booksellers Association, as the local partner of the Book Platform project, was proud to present the project and its results to the visitors of the Georgian stand, offering published surveys, and informational and promotional materials. Visitors were interested and happy to get brochures, bookmarks and bags, and to learn more about Book Platform. Salome Maghlakelidze, project local manager in Georgia, was there to introduce the project to everyone interested.
